Salas Opens 2019 with Win at Redlands Invite

REDLANDS, CA — Matthew Salas opened the season with a big win and the University of La Verne men's cross country kicked off the season at the Redlands Invitational.

Salas got his junior season off to a fast start. The junior beat out a field of NCAA Division III and junior college athletes to earn the early season win. Competing in his hometown, Salas completed the 6K course in 19:49, outpacing San Bernardino Valley's Elbis Rojas King by seven seconds.

From the Coach

"Great opener by Matt Salas picking up his first collegiate win in cross country," said La Verne Cross Country Head Coach Justin Wood. "The rest of the men ran a solid race and while we were 6th out of the field of 6, I don't think it represents what we are capable of in later season meets."

Alexander Medina was the next best finisher for the Leopards. The freshman shined in his collegiate debut taking 21st overall with a time of 20:41.

Senior Christian Mora crossed at 21:37 with Joel Reyes following close behind at 21:39.

Eric Lopez-Elwell posted a time of 22:04. Aidan Garcia (22:59) and Luke Garcia (24:37) closed out the race for the Leopards.

La Verne finished sixth as a team.

Next Race

The Leopards compete next at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, September 14.
