Softball drops pair to George Fox

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne softball team dropped a pair of games to George Fox on Sunday afternoon at Campus West.

La Verne falls to 4-3 overall and George Fox moves to 2-0.

Game 1: George Fox 4, La Verne 1

The Leopards couldn't come up with enough clutch hits as they left eight on base in a 4-1 loss in the first game.

Rachel Ogata, Alexis Schiff and Katherine Kibbe each got a pair of hits but George Fox starter Abbie Bergerson danced out of trouble every time.

Bergerson (1-0) pitched a complete game and gave up just one run while striking out four to pick up the win.

Amanda Woods broke the scoring seal with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth and tacked on two more on a single by Alyssa Gonzalez.

Woods drove in one more in the bottom of the fifth to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead.

The Leopards broke through and got one back in the bottom of the sixth as Sienna Kendricks scored Schiff on a sacrifice fly.

Raeleen Tellez doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh to give the Leopards a glimmer of hope but Bergerson retired the next three Leopards in order to seal the win.

Hayley Jaquess (2-1) gave up three earned runs in six innings and Lyndsay Godwin pitched a clean seventh for La Verne.

Game 2: George Fox 4, La Verne 2

The Leopards got on the board first with a pair of runs in the fourth inning but Alex Parker answered right back in the bottom frame with a grand slam to give the Bruins a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Victoria Baltazar and Sienna Kendricks each hit a bases-loaded, no-out singles to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead in the fourth and the Leopards looked to be on its way to a massive inning. But the Bruins turned a 1-2-3 double play and got the next batter to pop out to escape trouble.

Alex Parker cranked the slam with two outs to dead center to put the Bruins on top, 4-2.

Bergerson, who picked up a complete game win in the first game, took over with two outs in the six inning and earned a save with 1.2 scoreless innings.

The Leopards are back in action on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer.
