TUCSON, Ariz. — Alexis Schiff slugged two home runs and the University of La Verne mounted a successful extra-inning rally to defeat Denison, 5-4, on Wednesday at Lincoln Park in Tucson, Arizona.

Denison got out to a 3-0 lead as the Leopards struggled to get anything together offensively in the early going.

But Schiff woke up La Verne's offense with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the the sixth.

In the circle, Hayley Jaquess settled in after giving up six hits in the first four innings and kept the Big Red scoreless in the final three innings to send the game to extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Denison sacrificed the runner on second over to third and Ryan Lee promptly singled to bring in the run, giving the Big Red a 4-3 lead. Jaquess got the next two hitters to pop out and fly out to limit the damage with the heart of La Verne's due up in the bottom of the eighth.

The Leopards delivered. La Verne also elected to sacrifice the lead runner, Victoria Baltazar, to third and the Leopards got a big break as she scored on a botched fielder's choice to the pitcher to tie the game at 4-4. Sienna Kendricks proceeded to load the bases with a single and Melissa Garcia drew a five-pitch walk for a walk-off win.

Schiff was 2-for-3 on the game with three RBI and three runs scored. Kendricks went 3-for-4.

Jaquess (6-1), despite a shaky start, finished off the game for a gritty eight-inning complete game victory. She gave up 11 hits but walked just one and allowed two earned runs.

In the second game of the day, Wisconsin-La Crosse limited the Leopards to five hits to beat La Verne, 4-2.

Katherine Kibbe (7-4) held her own in the circle for La Verne but the Eagles strung four hits in the sixth inning for three runs and the Leopards couldn't answer back this time.

Kibbe led off the second inning with a single and scored the game's first run on a single by Garcia. The Eagles tied it the next half inning as Brittany Baldwin reached on a two-out error and was brought home by Emily Holldorf.

The Leopards reclaimed the lead in the fifth when Rachel Ogata reached on an error by the pitcher and Baltazar knocked her in with a single. But the lead was short lived as the Eagles scratched four singles to take a 4-2 lead.

The Leopards are back in action tomorrow against Puget Sound and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
