Softball wraps up spring break trip

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of La Verne softball team came up short in the final three games of its spring break trip to Tucson, Arizona. The Leopards dropped to Puget Sound, Wisconsin-Eau Claire and George Fox on Thursday and Friday at Lincoln Field.

The Leopards fall to 14-8 on the season.

Thursday: Puget Sound 7, La Verne 4

Mackenzie Dutton and Alexis Schiff each went yard for the Leopards but Puget Sound broke out for six runs in the fourth inning to win the first game on Thursday, 7-4.

With La Verne leading 2-1, the Loggers loaded the bases to start the bottom of the fourth on a walk, single and an error. La Verne starter Lyndsay Godwin got the next batter to strike out but the Loggers came through with two straight singles to take 4-2 lead and tacked on two more with a sacrifice fly and a single to stretch the lead to 7-2.

Dutton and Schiff hit right back with back-to-back homers to lead off the top of the fifth. Then Katherine Kibbe and Sienna Kendricks reached with two straight singles but the Leopards could not keep the rally going with the next three hitters going down in order.

Dutton finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI. Schiff went 2-for-4.

Kayla Andrus (1-1) gave up four runs while going the distance to pick up the win for Puget Sound.

Thursday: Wis.-Eau Claire 6, La Verne 5 (8 inn.)

Friday: George Fox 5, La Verne 0

The Leopards got at least one runner on base in every inning but one but could not cash in any of them in a 5-0 loss to George Fox on Friday.

It was just one of the days on offense for La Verne as they left a total of eight runners on base. The Leopards put at least two runners in four of seven innings and in three of them, they had two on with less than two outs.

George Fox broke the scoring seal in the top of the fourth. After a pair of walks, Alex Parker and Ashley Bunce came through with a double and a single, respectively, and Rebecca Pridmore hit an RBI groundout to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead.

The Bruins added a run in the fifth and Kayla Anderson capped off George Fox's scoring with a solo homer in the seventh.

Abbie Bergerson (4-1) notched a complete game shutout, scattering eight hits while walking just one.
