La Verne Outduels Athenas In Shootout

Boxscore

The University of La Verne revved up its offense to the tune of triple digits as it topped Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a 100-85 triumph in SCIAC women's basketball action Thursday night at Frantz Athletic Court.

The Leopards unleashed their uptempo style of play on the Athenas, forcing 31 turnovers on defense.  Offensively, the Leos connected on 12 three-pointers and had five players reach double figures.

La Verne opened a double-digit lead midway through the first half en route to a comfortable 49-32 cushion at the break.  The Leopards maintained their double-digit margin the rest of the way and led by as many as 22 points in the second half en route to victory as they improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Though the Athenas pulled to within 10 points at 95-85 with 1:36 to play, La Verne turned back CMS by scoring the final five points of the game, culminating on a Michelle Webb layup in the final seconds to reach the century mark.

CMS (1-6, 0-3 SCIAC) fought valiantly against the Leopards' frenetic pace, shooting a respectable 47.8% (32-67) from the field.

The duo of Tyne McClure and Brittni Tapia led La Verne in scoring with 13 points apiece, with McClure collecting a team-high seven rebounds.  Lindsey Foster and Lina Arreola finished with 12 points with Megan Musashi adding 10 points.  Tapia along with Leslie Steele went 3-6 from three-point range

The Athenas were led in scoring by Sarah King and Madeline Barnes who each tallied 14 points while teammate Mara Falahee posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

La Verne returns to action on December 15 as it plays host to Trinity University (Tex.) in a 1:00 pm start at Frantz Athletic Court.
