The University of La Verne used its long-range shooting touch to help deliver a 96-56 win over Caltech in SCIAC women's basketball action Thursday night in Pasadena.
La Verne posted a season-high 19 three-pointers against the Beavers, the second most of any NCAA Division III squad has made this season. Four different Leopard players made three treys on the evening.
The Leopards were never threatened in the contest and led by as many as 35 points in the first 20 minutes of action before taking a 60-28 edge into the locker room. The Leos struck early and often by connecting on 12 treys in the first half.
Additionally, the Leos forced Caltech into 20 turnovers in the first half. Overall, La Verne forced 36 turnovers which it converted into 40 points. Coming off their 21-21 effort at the free throw line against Lake Forest, the Leopards made 13 of their 21 attempts from the charity stripe against the Beavers.
In the second half, La Verne converted on another seven field goals from three-point range as it led by as many as 43 points en route to the 40-point triumph. The Leos came within four points of triple digits but were held under the century mark for just the second time in the last six outings.
The duo of Lindsay Foster and Kimmie Fung tied for team high scoring honors with 11 points each while Leslie Steele and Ashley Griffin tallied 10 points apiece for the Leos. Foster also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Caltech (1-10, 0-2 SCIAC) was led in scoring by Stephanie Wong who posted a game high 13 points. Kristin Anderson totaled a game-high 12 rebounds for the Beavers.
With the win, the Leopards improve to 3-0 in league play and 6-5 overall. La Verne returns to the hardwood on Saturday against Chapman (11-2, 3-1 SCIAC) in a 5:00 pm start at Frantz Athletic Court.
