Women's Basketball falters late against Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE, Calif. — Noelle Cobb and Emily Myers turned in solid performances for the University of La Verne women's basketball team, but La Verne's offense once again sputtered in the fourth quarter in a 69-64 loss to Cal Lutheran on Saturday at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

La Verne falls to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran improves to 9-3 and 3-0.

For three quarters, the Leopards maintained a slight advantage over the Regals, who received votes in the latest D3hoops.com Poll. The Leopards found holes in the Regals' defense, hitting midrange jumpers with consistency, and held Cal Lutheran's top scoring duo of Chelsea Jacoby and Jessica Salottolo to just three points going into the final frame.

But the Leopards went cold in the 4th, going just 2-for-13 from the field while the Regals went 7-of-15 to outscore La Verne, 18-6.

This is the third game in a row in which the Leopards played three quarters of solid basketball only to falter in the last period. La Verne went toe-to-toe with defending SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Jan. 2 before slipping in the fourth quarter and saw a three-point lead slip away against Whittier earlier this week.

Myers and Cobb carried the Leopards offensively. Myers had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Cobb scored 14 points, seven rebounds and handed out three assists.

Trianna Owen had a game-high 15 points for Cal Lutheran. All 10 players who took the court for the Regals scored at least three points.

La Verne is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Chapman at 7:30 p.m.
