LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's basketball team executed its game plan to near perfection in a 64-47 win over Caltech on Saturday at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

La Verne improves to 3-12 overall and 2-5 in the SCIAC. Caltech falls to 2-14 and 0-7.

The Leopards were clicking on all cylinders. On offense, La Verne shot 47.3 percent from the field as a team and assisted on 22 of 26 made baskets.

"What we had been working on it practice translated into the game and that's always great for a coach to see," La Verne head coach Julie Shaw said. "But we can always do better."

On the other end of the floor, the Leopards limited Caltech, who had come into the game shooting a league-best 34 percent from beyond the arc, to just 1-of-10 from downtown.

"We identified the shooters and how they like to get them open," Shaw said. "And their best shooters are their best players. So we thought that if we could take away that part of their game, we would have a good shot in this game."

La Verne also held Caltech's best player Kate Lewis to just four points and without a rebound. "We've been really working on learning our personnel, knowing what people like to do and what their comfort zone is," Shaw said of La Verne's defense on Lewis. "We pushed her out of her comfort zone and limited their looks inside in general."

Emily Myers led all players with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Noelle Cobb, who was shooting 57 percent in SCIAC play coming into the game, continued her efficient play, knocking down 5-of-6 shots for 13 points.

Shannon Irwin posted eight points, six assists and five steals and Erika Pagkalinawan had four points, four rebounds and four assists off the bench.

The Leopards used a 10-0 streak in the second quarter to break the game open and never looked back. La Verne kept its foot on the gas as it stretched the lead to 59-26 early in the fourth quarter.

But with the game well in hand, the Leopards lost their focus a little bit and Beavers finished the game on a 21-5 run to reduce the final margin.

Stephanie Wong tied Myers for a game-high 17 points for the Beavers and Nika Haleftiras chipped in 13.

The Leopards are back in action on Tuesday at Occidental.
