Women's Basketball drops SCIAC opener at Redlands 67-38

REDLANDS, Calif. — Bailey Kurahashi scored a game-high 18 points for the La Verne women's basketball team, but the rest of the Leopards struggled to get going in a 67-38 loss to Redlands on Saturday afternoon at Currier Gymnasium.

The shots just didn't fall for La Verne (0-10, 0-1 SCIAC). The Leopards made just 10 field goals on 19.2 percent shooting and missed all 14 of their 3-point attempts. The Leopards did a good job of getting to the rim and drawing fouls, making 18 of 27 free throw attempts, but it wasn't nearly enough.

The Bulldogs (4-6, 1-0) shot 45 percent from the field and doubled up La Verne on the boards, outrebounding the Leopards 54-27. Jade Cheldelin led Redlands with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Angela Silver had 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Kurahashi was active on both ends of the floor for La Verne. She constantly got into the lane on offense, earning 11 free throws and making 10 of them. She was also a pest on Redlands ball handlers, swiping a game-high five steals.

Brianna Bishop added eight points, four rebounds and two steals for La Verne.

The Leopards are back in action on Wednesday at Chapman. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
