Women's Basketball tops Caltech behind Cobb's 22 points

LA VERNE, Calif. — Noelle Cobb scored 22 points and got a plenty of help from the bench as the La Verne women's basketball team defeated Caltech 84-80 on Wednesday night at Braun Center.

Cobb shot 9 of 16 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Bailey Kurahashi scored 18 points and dished out six assists in 23 minutes off the bench. Brianna Bishop also put in big minutes off the bench, scoring 17 points in 25 minutes.

The Leopards (3-20, 3-11 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) had the best offensive night of the season, moving the ball well and being efficient with their shots. La Verne shot a season-high 46.7 percent and sank 20 of 25 free throws (80 percent). La Verne's 84 points and 21 assists are season-bests outside of the 100-98 four-overtime win over the Beavers on Jan. 21.

La Verne trailed for most of the first half before going on a run of 13 unanswered points aided by a pair of baskets from Cobb and a 3-pointer each from Bishop and Kurahashi in the third quarter to grab a nine-point lead. The Leopards made 8 of 13 shots (61.5 percent) in the third quarter including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

The Beavers (3-20, 1-13) got back within a point early in the fourth quarter but Cobb sank three straight shots to put the Leopards back up by 69-62 with 6:20 to go.

Caltech's Kate Lewis posted a near triple-double finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Grace Peng added 28 points but the Beavers didn't get much from others.

The Leopards are back in action on Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
