Leopards beat Lobos, win fourth straight

LA VERNE, CA — Three Leopards finished in double figures and the University of La Verne women's basketball team scored its fourth straight win, defeating the visiting Sul Ross State Lobos 78-72 Wednesday evening in The Tents.

Season Impact

The Leopards keep rolling. La Verne moves its overall record to 6-3 overall and has already surpassed last season's win total. The Lobos fall to 4-8 this season.

Monica Garcia Silva added another great scoring performance, finishing with a game-high 26 points. Garcia Silva grabbed many of her points the hard way, grabbing the ball at the high post and driving down the lane. The junior added 15 of her points in the third quarter helping the Leopards get out to a 21 point lead late in the period. She added eight rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block.

Guard Bailey Kurahashi dropped 15 points in the game with four three-pointers moving her points per game average to 11.1. The Torrance native grabbed five rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Freshman point guard Jazzlyn Johnson continued to show why she's one of the top newcomers to the SCIAC. Johnson scored 12 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. 

Hannah Rogers had a huge impact off the bench for La Verne. The Santa Barbara City College transfer made her presence known down low, grabbing nine boards and scoring seven points while also adding two assists. Fellow forward Brittany McDaniel continued to show her impact on the defensive end finishing with a pair of blocks and five rebounds. McDaniel currently ranks third in the SCIAC with 2.1 blocks per game.

The Lobos were led by Lizette Heredia's 14 points. 

How it Happened

After falling behind by seven points early in the game the Leopards recovered late in the quarter, taking their first lead after a pair of free throws by Rogers put La Verne up 17-16. The Leopards doubled up on the Sul Ross State in the second quarter scoring 24 points to the Lobos' 12. Kurahashi led the surge for the Leopards dropping all four of her three-pointer in the period.

The Leopard kept rolling in the third quarter opening the second half on a 14-7 run. The Lobos went on a run late in the game but the Leopards held on for the win.

Next Game

The Leopards will be back in action after the holiday break when they host UC Merced on December 28 at 4 p.m.
