Kurahashi goes off, Leopards beat Hawks

LA VERNE, CA — Bailey Kurahashi flirted with her single game made three-pointers record and the Leopards capped off 2018 with a 71-60 win over San Diego Christian.

Season Impact

The Leopards improve to 7-4 overall. La Verne has won five of their last six and take plenty of momentum before heading back into SCIAC play. The Hawks drop to 6-9 on the season.

How It Happened

Kurahashi knocked down nine three-pointers, several from well behind the arc. The guard finished with a game-high 32 points, four rebounds, and three assists. The senior set the La Verne single-game record last season when she made 11 three-pointers in a 135-84 win over Saint Katherine.

Kurahashi got started early for the Leopards, opening the game with a pair of threes. But the Hawks closed out the opening period strong with Kaitlyn McKinney knocking down a buzzing beating three to put her squad up four.

In the second, Kurahashi added her fourth three of the game from way downtown, drilling a 30 footer to put the Leopards up 26-22. She followed it up with an even deeper three, nailing a 32 footer on her next attempt.

The Torrance native continued to launch from deep in the third quarter nailing back-to-back long balls. Her first came at the top of the key and the second followed a missed jumper by the Hawks. She sank another deep shot to give the Leopards a 47-32 lead. Kurahashi led off the fourth quarter with her eighth three-pointer of the game to give the Leopards their biggest lead of the game, 61-48.

The Leopards held off a late surge by the Hawks to come away with the win.

Maggie Lamas had her first double-figure scoring performance as a Leopard, finishing with 10 points. Destinee Garr and Monica Garcia Silva had big games off the boards. Garr racked up a career-high 11 rebounds and Garcia Silva totaled 10 boards. Garr also dished out a game-high five assists.

Shayleen Toehe led the Hawks with 23 points.

Next Game

The Leopards get back to SCIAC action on January 5 when they host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 2 p.m.
