CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Leopards lost their SCIAC opener, 2-0, at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday afternoon on a pair of second half goals after not being able to get much going offensively.

How it happened: The Leopards came out of the gates slowly and conceded the possession battle to the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer dominated the shot count early, but La Verne goalkeeper Delanie Pacheco was up to the task. The Sagehens fired seven shots on goal in the first half -- many of them quality chances – but Pacheco turned away all of them, including a 1-on-1 opportunity in the 15th minute and a tricky one-hopper from distance.

The Sagehens finally broke through in the second half. Danika Bethune opened the scoring in the 60th minute with a liner from the top of the box and Sara Ach finished off her own rebound to beat Pacheco for an insurance goal in the 75th minute.

La Verne almost got one back when JJ Weaver was able to get her head on a cross, but the attempt was saved by Annie Wedel.

Despite the two goals allowed, Pacheco was stellar again in the second half. Pacheco made a fingertip save to deny Bethune of her second goal and made another diving save earlier in the half.

What it means: La Verne drops its SCIAC opener and falls to 2-3-0 overall.

Player of the game: If it weren't for Pacheco, the score line would have been more lopsided. The First Team All-SCIAC goalie made a couple of spectacular saves and ended up with a total of 11 on the evening.

Stat of the game: The Leopards were outshot, 25-3, which reveals how the game went. La Verne was blanked in the first half and got three off in the second.

Up next: La Verne will look to bounce back against Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 7 p.m. for its SCIAC home opener. The Regals are ranked No. 8 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Women's while the Leopards check in at No. 10.
