Women’s Soccer dominates Whittier on Senior Night

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's soccer team sent out its seniors in style as it defeated Whittier, 2-0, on Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

How it happened: La Verne completely dominated the run of play throughout the entire match.

La Verne peppered the Whittier goal from the outset. Sophomore Alexa Smith got the Leopards on the board in the 17th minute when she pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box and knocked in her second goal of the season.

The Leopards kept up the pressure, earning corner kicks and threatening the Poets around their 18-yard box. In the 38th minute, Tatiana Raygoza got a launched a point-blank shot that was turned away by Whittier goalkeeper Caitlyn Schrepfer but Kelsea Varner got the rebound on the left side and floated the ball back to Raygoza, who this time put it into the back of the net to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead that would hold up as the final result.

The score would have been a lot more lopsided had it not been for Schrepfer's effort in net for Whittier. The goalie turned away a couple of point-blank shots for JJ Weaver in the opening minutes and deflected away several close-range shots to keep Whittier within striking distance.

Stat of the game: La Verne goalkeeper Delanie Pacheco didn't have much to do tonight as she and the back line held the Poets to zero shots on frame. La Verne had nine including two goals.

Senior Night: Before the match, La Verne celebrated the careers of its five seniors (Audriana Arceneaux, Deanna Doss, Pacheco, Natalie Vasquez and Weaver) with a brief ceremony and all five got the start.

Arceneaux, Doss and Vasquez contributed to the clean sheet with solid play in the back line. Weaver registered a game-high six shots and came within inches of scoring on several occasions.

What it means: La Verne finishes the season 7-10-1 (5-8-1 SCIAC) and sixth in SCIAC standings.
