Penalty kick sinks Women’s Soccer at Oxy

LOS ANGELES — A 65th minute penalty kick from Occidental forward proved the difference as the Tigers beat the University of La Verne women's soccer team, 1-0, on Saturday at Lower Field.

What it means: With Pomona-Pitzer earning a win over Chapman in the Saturday night game, La Verne is eliminated from SCIAC Postseason Tournament contention.

How it happened: After a back-and-forth first half, Oxy came out firing out of the break. The Tigers registered four shots in the first 15 minutes of the second and knocked on the door until they earned a penalty shot in the 65th minute. Oxy winger Michaela Tsuha stepped up to take the shot and converted the spot kick for the game-winner.

The Leopards' best shot at a equalizer game in the 74th minute when Lauren Toneck was able to get a headed shot off, but Oxy goalkeeper Dallas Gunny came up with the save.

Just missed: JJ Weaver missed a go-ahead goal in the first half by inches. The senior headed a cross towards the net in the 30th minute but rattled the crossbar.

Player of the game: Delanie Pacheco was solid in net once again. The senior turned away every shot other than the penalty to keep the Leopards in the game. She ended the game with six saves.

Weaver recorded a team-high three shots including the near miss in the first half.

Up next: La Verne returns to action on Oct. 9 at Redlands. The kickoff is at 7 p.m.
