Women's Soccer Falls at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — There were plenty of opportunities to go around for the University of La Verne women's soccer team on Saturday, but none of them stuck as the Leopards fell to Chapman, 1-0, on a 59th minute goal from Hayley Thorfinnson.

How it happened: Thorfinnson broke the scoreless tie with a header from a free kick by Haley Fedden. Fedden lobbed it into the box and Thorfinnson was able to fight emerge from a crowd of defenders to put it away.

La Verne had a flurry of opportunities with about 15 minutes remaining in the game but Chapman defense clapmed down. Alexa Smith had a shot blocked by a defender, Lauren Toneck missed just wide left and a strike by Kyndall Taylor was turned away by goalkeeper Kristin Kleinow.

Stat of the game: The Leopards outshot the Panthers 15 to 4 and controlled the pace of the game. Of the 15 attempts, seven were on target but the Leopards just could not get one past Kleinow.

La Verne dominated possession from the get-go. The Leopards got off five straight shots to begin the game before Chapman got in its only attempt of the first half.

Kleinow made seven saves in 90 minutes of action.

Player of the game: JJ Weaver was active up top, registering four shots with two of them on frame.

Carlee Chien and Alexa Smith had two shots each.

What it means: La Verne loses second straight one-goal match that easily could have gone the other way and drops to 1-3 in SCIAC play (3-5 overall).

Up next: The Leopards will hope for better luck when they host Occidental (4-2, 2-2 SCIAC) on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
