Women's Soccer wins home opener, improves to 2-0

LA VERNE, Calif. — Andrea Story beat the keeper in the 68th minute, and that was all the scoring the University of La Verne women's soccer team needed, beating William Jessup 1-0 in a tightly contested match Thursday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

Season Impact:  The Leopards improve to 2-0 this season, earning both of their victories by a score of 1-0. William Jessup still searches for their first win, dropping to 0-5.

After a back and forth first half that saw quality shots from both sides, the Leopards finally broke got on the board midway through the second period. Story, a junior from Sacramento, found Jessica Hernandez open at the top of the box. Hernandez filtered the ball back to Story who sent a hard shot on the right side past the Warriors' goalie for the 1-0 lead that proved to be the difference maker.

The Leopards' defense wouldn't let the Warriors get a clean look at the goal the rest of the game. The Warriors managed to send three more shots including a desperation launch with just seconds remaining in the game, but none threatened La Verne's lead.

Both teams seemed evenly matched throughout the game with each squad firing 11 shots. La Verne's keepers stayed busy all night. Jasmine Valdez got the start in the box grabbing four saves, and Hanien Samara stepped into the game in the second half finishing with three saves.

The Leopards put the pressure on William Jessup in the first half, rattling off seven shots with four corner kicks. Mia Trugerro nearly gave the Leopards the lead late in the first half. The junior fired a hard shot from the left side of the box, but William Jessup keeper Camille Cavey made an outstretched save to keep the game even.

Next Game: The Leopards next host UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs this Saturday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. The women's game will be followed by the University of La Verne men's soccer team match against Whittier College at 7:30 p.m.
