Women's Swimming & Diving Season Preview

A new year brings a new outlook and optimism for the University of La Verne women's swimming & diving team, as the squad looks to grab more success in 2010-11.

John Hallman, heading into his 13th season as head coach, believes that a successful season is upon the Leopard squad though they face a formidable slate in SCIAC competition.

"We should be a little stronger in the free and fly events this season," said Hallman.  "We're also strong in the diving events, so we're in position to improve upon last season's finish."

Three key returnees provide a solid base in seniors Tiffany Martin and Amanda McCadden along with sophomore Jaycee Hallford.

Martin was a SCIAC finalist a year ago in the 200 individual medley while McCadden will be the Leopards' top diver as well as a potential scorer in conference competition.  Hallford showed promise as a freshman last season and looks to improve during her sophomore campaign.

Among the newcomers, the Leopards will look to a couple of dual sport athletes to bolster the roster.  Both transfer Brittany Orduno and freshman Bethie Ross could provide solid contributions this season.  Ross was a CIF finalist in the 200 individual medley last season while Orduno will factor in both the sprinting and butterfly events.  Both athletes will play water polo at the conclusion of their swim seasons.

Hallman also has high expectations for transfer Erin Mortin and freshman Shelby Broyles, both of whom will look to provide help in the distance and freestyle races.

Joining McCadden among the Leopard divers is Victoria Moreno, who makes her La Verne debut after an injuries impacted her freshman campaign.

The Leos open the season Oct. 23 at the Malibu Invitational.
