Athletes Participate in "Hour of Power"

On Tuesday, November 9, The University of La Verne men's and women's swimming and diving team participated in the fifth annual "Hour of Power" relay set up by Carleton College in honor of Ted Mullin, who passed away in 2006 from sarcoma, which is a rare soft-tissue cancer. All the proceeds raised will be donated to the University of Chicago to support research towards the cause and treatment of cancer in young people.

The Leopards swam an hour-long relay at Los Flores Park beginning at 12pm with over 100 NCAA Division III schools, club teams, high schools, and students abroad from India, Australia, Figi and Chile, including fellow SCIAC teams Whittier College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, University of Redlands and Occidental College.

In 2009, it was estimated that 6,471 individuals participated in the relay, 134 schools including 103 colleges, and raised $78,000. Since its inception in 2006, the relay has brought in more than $190,000 to be donated towards sarcoma research.
