Men's Swimming Season Preview

The University of La Verne men's swimming and diving team sets to make strides as it prepares for the 2010-11 campaign.

The Leopard men begin the season at the Malibu Invitational on Oct. 23 with plenty of optimism for a solid campaign later in the season.

Head coach John Hallman believes that 2010-11 could result in an improved showing in the always-competitive SCIAC, where top quality talent has become more the norm in recent years.

"The SCIAC is going to be as strong as it has been, but it could me a little more wide-open this season," said Hallman, who begins his 13th season at the helm of the Leopard program.  "Many of our strengths could be a factor in us possibly moving up in the conference standings."

Leading the way for La Verne is a trio of solid returnees in Mark Wilson, Dennis Rickert and Scott Jones.  Wilson was a finalist in the 400 individual medley last season, and Hallman predicts more success for him this season.  In addition, the Leopards return Jones and Rickert, each of whom were finalists were competitive in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

Hallman is excited about the newcomers, which include Marc Okimura, the Hawaii state champion in the 100 breast.  Joining Okimura among breaststroke competitors is Colin Wheatley, who was a CIF finalist in the 100 breast a year ago.  A dual sport athlete, Wheatley will join the Leopard swim squad at the conclusion of the water polo season.

Among sprinters, the Leos welcome another swim/water polo athlete in Kyle Thorsness, a transfer from Orange Coast College.  Additionally, look for Kyle Yasui (50/100 free) to make an impact in his first season at La Verne.

Another newcomer is freshman Jake Tittl, who will help the Leos in diving events.  Tittl finished third in springboard diving at the CIF Championships.

La Verne's first big test comes on December 3, when they host Pomona-Pitzer in a conference dual.
