LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's track and field team posted a record of 1-3 at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual meet of the season at Ortmayer Stadium and Campus West on Saturday.
Mele Halalilo broke personal records and finished in the top three in all four throwing events. The senior dual-sport athlete (Volleyball) recorded tosses of 38.76 meters (127 feet, 2 inches) in the javelin throw, 11.98m (39-03.75) in the shot put, 41.30m (135-06) in the hammer throw and 39.73m (130-04) in the discus throw.
Perhaps the most exciting finish of the day came in the 3000m steeplechase where freshman Melissa Cerrillos overtook two runners with late burst to finish first with a personal record time of 11 minutes, 34.62 seconds.
Fellow freshman Rachael Dela Cruz, who made her season debut just two weeks ago, continued to lower her personal best marks. She finished eighth in the 1500m with a time of 5:13.77 and fifth in the 5000m with a time of 20:28.06.
Catalina Lee Kim beat her personal record in the triple jump with a mark of 10.97m (36-00) and added a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.69 seconds, also a personal record.
Ebony Turner finished second in the high jump with a leap of 1.52m (4-11.75) and Taylor Schulze was second in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.35m (10-11.75).
Tiahna Gillon finished second in the 100m with a time of 12.36 seconds.
The Leopards are back in action on Saturday at the UC San Diego Invitational.
