Yaxley Records 1,000th Kill, 100th Ace on Day 2 of Leo Invite

LA VERNE, Calif. — Brittany Yaxley reached the 1,000-kill and the 100-service ace milestones against Nazareth in the final game of the 2014 Leopard Invitational as the Leopard swept on the weekend.

La Verne beat Nazareth, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19, on Saturday evening and took down Virginia Wesleyan 26-24, 25-14, 25-19, earlier in the day.

Yaxley needed 34 kills to reach the 1,000-kill benchmark heading into the weekend and accomplished the feat with her fifth kill in the first set of the match against Nazareth.

The junior had 12 kills against Endicott on Friday and had 17 against Virginia Wesleyan.

The 100th ace came in the second set and it was a close one that just stayed inside the sideline.

Not only was Yaxley's fifth kill against Nazareth a personal milestone, but it evened the score at 13-13 after La Verne dug itself in a 6-1 hole to start the game.

After trading points, the Leopards went on to take the set and dominated the rest of the way.

The Leopards did not commit a single attack error in the second set and hit .483 while holding the Golden Flyers to just .083 hitting. La Verne led by as many as 13 points when Yaxley put down a kill to make it 22-9. Nazareth showed a burst late, but it too little, too late.

La Verne led wire-to-wire in set three. The Leopards had four total blocks in the set and Destinee Sales had four kills.

La Verne 3, Virginia Wesleyan 0

The early game against Virginia Wesleyan was almost the mirror image. The Leopards pulled out the first set after the Marlins gave them some trouble, but used big runs to cruise in the second and the third.

In the first set, the Marlins took three consecutive points late to tie the set at 24-24, but Ashlyn Cross and Kylie Cooke knocked down two straight kills to give La Verne a 1-0 set lead.

The Leopards put the second set away early. La Verne opened the frame on a 10-1 run keyed by four combined aces from Cross and Kelsi Robinson and never looked back. Robinson pitched in four kills in the set.

Virginia Wesleyan started strong in the third, taking a 13-11 lead on a Tiffany Barrett kill and not relinquishing the lead up to that point.

Then the Leopards went on one of their middle-of-the-set runs. Yaxley got it started with a kill, Nysa Allen tied it up at 13-13 and the Leopards built a 17-13 lead in the blink of an eye.

Yaxley and Robinson combined for five kills the rest of the way to wrap up the set and the match for La Verne.
