LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of La Verne volleyball team has earned a national ranking for the first time since 2012.
In the latest NCAA Division III Coaches Poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday, the Leopards came in at No. 24, returning to the Top 25 for the first time since being ranked 25th in Week 10 of the 2012 season.
The Leopards are 2-1 against other Top 25 teams this season. La Verne beat No. 13 (then-No.6) Colorado College, 3-1, on Sept. 13 and defeated No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 3-2, on Oct. 17. The loss came against then-No. 2 Cal Lutheran on Oct. 4.
The Leopards have completely turned around their fortunes this season after going 8-23 in 2013 and look primed to return to the NCAA National Championship Tournament. La Verne is off to a 19-3 start and has already locked in a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament to be held on Nov. 6 and 8.
La Verne has three games remaining on the regular season schedule. The Leopards travel to Whittier tonight to face the Poets at 7:30 p.m. before hosting No. 3 Cal Lutheran for its last home match of the season on Thursday. Then the Leopards will wrap up their season on the road at Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 1.
