Volleyball No. 2 in West Region

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne volleyball team is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III West Region in the first regional rankings released this season.

FULL RANKINGS

In an odd way, La Verne is ranked ahead of five national top-25 teams, two of which it has already beaten this season. The Leopards beat national No. 6 Colorado College, 3-1, on Sept. 13 and defeated No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 3-2, on Oct. 17.

The Leopards are off to a 18-3 (18-2 in-division) start and are 10-2 in SCIAC play, and their only in-division losses have come against No. 2 Cal Lutheran and No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Regals are ranked first in the region while the Athenas are fourth.

As long as La Verne takes care of its business down the stretch of the season, it is in a good spot to land at least an at-large bid to the NCAA National Championship Tournament.

La Verne kicks off the 2014 Homecoming Weekend tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., hosting Caltech for its annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.
