Women's Water Polo edges CMS in SCIAC opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Guarina Garcia and Stephanie Rosero each notched a hat trick and the La Verne women's water polo team used a 3-0 fourth quarter run to beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 10-7 on Saturday at Axelrood Aquatics Center.

The Leopards went into fourth period with a one-goal lead but Garcia and Rosero opened the quarter with back-to-back power play goals and Garcia added another with 2:46 left in the game to take 10-6 lead. Ardelle Aquino had a big hand in the run, assisting on both of Garcia's scores.

Roxy Kiessling stopped the bleeding for the Athenas with a goal with 1:41 left but La Verne's defense held to finish the game.

Megan Little returned to the pool after missing a couple of games due to an injury and chipped in two goals. Aquino and Jasmine Bustamante each added a goal.

Kiessling led all players with five goals but the Athenas didn't get much from anyone else. Tess Van Hulsen and Aracelia Aldrete each had one goal.

The Athenas got on the board first with Aldrete's tally at the 4:19 mark in the first quarter but the Leopards closed the frame with three unanswered goal, including two from Rosero, to take a 3-1 and never trailed the rest of the way.

The Leopards are back in action on Wednesday at home against Cal Lutheran.
