JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Michael Bonicatto shot a first round score of 72 and the University of La Verne golf team shot a 9-over 297 on Day One of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Friday.
"We got off to a solid start today," La Verne head coach Chris Davis said. "We let a few shots get away towards the end of the round when the wind started to pick up that we'd like to have back, but we are still in the hunt."
Bonicatto had two birdies and two bogeys in the round and a couple of big par saves.
"Michael had some great saves out there to keep the momentum of his round going," Davis said. "He led the charge for us out there today and didn't miss a putt inside of ten feet."
Paul Gomez shot a 2-over 74, freshman Alec Spencer had a 3-over 75 and Keven Holliday rounded out La Verne's scoring with a 4-over 76.
"All in all, we played solid as a team, so if we can put together a solid round tomorrow we can position ourselves for a final round push," Davis added.
LaGrange College is in 1st with 1-over 289 and Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe is the individual leader at 4-under 68 after Day One.
