UPLAND, Calif. – Led by six top-10 individual finishes, the No. 8 University of La Verne golf team claimed its second tournament title in a row, winning the six-team Baldy View Shootout (par-70) on Saturday at the Upland Hills Golf Course with a low score of one-under 279. Junior Andre Bedard took the individual title with a six-under 64.

"We had a really good mindset out there," La Verne head coach Chris Davis said. "It was just, 'hit a bunch of greens in regulation.' The greens were punched and sanded so if we made some putts, it was a bonus."

Freshman Jake LeMons was the next low scorer for La Verne, finishing tied for 5th with a score of one-over 71. Alec Spencer and Paul Gomez rounded out La Verne's scoring at a 72 each and tied for 8th overall.

Austin Matzaganian, who competed as an individual, carded a one-under 69 to finish 3rd overall. Michael Bonicatto also recorded a top-10 finish, shooting a 72.

Trent Twamley was the next Leopard on the leaderboard at 73, which was good for a tie for 13th place overall. Justin Smith finished tied for 23rd with a score of 77.

No. 13 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished 2nd with a total of 285, six strokes behind La Verne. Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer tied for 3rd at 299, and Occidental (301) and Whittier (308) rounded out the field.

"This was a great confidence builder for the eight players that played in our lineup," Davis added. "We will use this momentum into this upcoming week to get ready for the SCIAC Championship."

La Verne will head to the 2014 SCIAC Championships on April 27-29 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
