SAN DIMAS, Calif. — The No. 15 University of La Verne men's golf team earned a 21-stroke win over Pomona-Pitzer, 294-315, at Via Verde Country Club on Sunday.

All-American Kelby Scharmann led the way for the Leopards with a three-under 69 and Austin Matzaganian posted a two-over 74 to finish second among the Leopards. Both Scharmann and Matzaganian caught fire on the back nine, shooting 33 and 32, respectively.

"Kelby and Austin righted the ship after a tough start to post two great scores for us on a very tight and penalizaing golf course," La Verne head coach Chris Davis said. "It's a confidence builder heading into SCIAC No. 1, which will be played on a similarly styled course."

Trent Twamly shot a three-over 75 and Alec Spencer rounded out La Verne's scoring with a four-over 76.

Michael Bonicatto carded a five-over 77 and Justin Smith came in with a score of 86.

"It was important for us to stick to our game plan of getting the ball in play off the tee by any means necessary," Davis said. "A solid week of practice will get us ready for our first SCIAC event at Robinson Ranch next week."

La Verne returns to action next weekend for the first of two SCIAC tournaments. The two-round event will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita.
