CHINO HILLS, Calif. — Kelby Scharmann carded a two-day score of 3-under 138 to lead No. 15/17 La Verne men's golf team to a second-place finish at SCIAC No. 2 at Los Serranos Country Club (par-72) this weekend.
The Leopards finished 3-over par as a team (286-292=578), five strokes behind the winner Redlands in a play-six, count-four format.
Scharmann shot a 3-under 69 in the first round and an even-par 72 to finish third. Keegan Sheard of Cal Lutheran earned the medalist honors after shooting a 9-under 63 (63-73=136) and defending national champion Bobby Holden of Redlands came in second at 6-under 138.
Alec Spencer and Trent Twamley finished top-10 for the Leopards. Both got the Leopards off to a fast starts with first round scores 2-under 70 and Spencer closed the tournament with a 1-over 73 while Twamley came in with a score of 78 on Sunday.
Michael Bonicatto rounded out La Verne's scoring with a 5-over 149 and finished tied for 14th overall. Bonicatto started slow with a 77 on Saturday but came back with a 72 on Sunday. His second round score was tied for third best on the day.
Justin Smith finished tied for 23rd (78-75=153) and Austin Matzaganian came in tied for 27th (78-77=155).
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (289-291=580) finished third as a team and Cal Lutheran was fourth (293-293=586).
With four rounds of SCIAC play in the books, La Verne sits in second place behind Redlands.
The Leopards are back in action at the SCIAC Championships at Oak Valley Golf Course on April 26-28.
