LINCOLN, Neb. – Chancise Watkins earned All-American honors by placing third overall in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Saturday.

Watkins ran his final heat in the two-section final in 21.504 seconds, which was three-one thousandth of a second behind second place Bruce Gray of Greenville (Ill.). Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Thurgood Dennis won the race, finishing in 21.27.

Watkins was ranked 12^th before the championship meet started, but posted the third fastest time (21.57 seconds) in Friday's prelims to qualify for the finals.

The 200 was a new event for the NCAA Division III indoor championship and Watkins' qualifying mark of 21.77 at the Mountain T's Invitational on Feb. 7 was the first time he had ever formally competed in the indoor 200m.

Watkins becomes the second male indoor track and field All-American in La Verne history and the fifth La Verne All-American overall. Paul Turner placed third in the triple jump last year for the men. Lori Waters (shot put) and Chelsea Sherier  (pole vault) also earned the honors in 2004 and 2005, respectively, and Lenore Moreno won the national championship in the 5000m on Friday.

Watkins is also a two-time All-American in the outdoor track and field. He captured sixth place in the 400 meters at the 2012 NCAA outdoor championships and placed seventh overall in the 200 meters at the 2013 championships.
