Watkins Named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week

PASADENA – One day after being named the Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, La Verne sprinter Chancise Watkins earned the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday.

This is the second time in three weeks Watkins has earned the honor. He won the award for the week of March 10-16 after placing third in the 200 meters at the 2014 NCAA Indoor National Championships.

Watkins posted a pair of Division III-leading times in the 200 and 400 meters at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #2 on Saturday. The senior won both events in record-breaking fashion, claiming the 200 with a school-record time of 21.29 seconds and winning the 400 in personal best 47.72. His 200m time was three-one hundredth of a second off the SCIAC record,

Along with Nick Gonsalves, James Francis and Robert Oshodin, Watkins also helped La Verne win the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.37 seconds, which is ranked second in Division III.

Watkins and the Leopards return to action this weekend at the Cal/Nevada Collegiate Championships in La Jolla.
