CLAREMONT, Calif. – It was another long and tiring weekend for the University of La Verne track and field teams at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.
There were a staggering 17 heats of the women's 100-meter dash and you bet that some of the Lady Leopards had to wait before it was their time.
Ebony Williams performed well with a time of 12.64 seconds coming in nineteenth place overall. Nicole Crutchfield and Tiahna Gillion finished in a two-way tie for 23rd place overall with a time of 12.71 seconds.
Competing with a mix of unattached and upper-division athletes, Jasmin Gonzalez brought her A game and placed 12th overall in the 400 meter hurdles a 1:07.42.
La Verne got solid performances from the track, but more impressive results came from the field.
In the pole vault, Katie Yeager and Taylor Bernhard were caught in nine-way tie for fourth place. Both Yeager and Bernhard vaulted 11-05.75 (3.50m).
In the triple jump Lindsey Foster jumped a new personal record of 34-07.00 (10.54m) and placed 9th overall.
Deanna Doss and Jaclyn Castleberry continued to do great things in the shot put, discuss, and hammer throw.
Doss competed in a total of three events. The senior had a mark of 34-07.50 (10.55m) in the shot put, placing her 13th overall. In the discus she threw a mark of 126-07 (38.58m) for 10th place overall. In her third and final event, Doss powered her way to a 6th place finish with a mark of 161-06 (49.24m).
Doss's throwing partner Jaclyn Castlberry took 18th overall in the shot put with a toss of 33-09.25 (10.29m) and finished 9th overall in the discus with a toss of 130-04 (39.73m).
The men continued on with solid performances on the track and on the field.
All-American Chancise Watkins, who owns the fastest time in the 200 meters in Division III this year, won the event with a time of 21.45 seconds. In the 100, Watkins took 6th overall with a time of 10.85 seconds. Watkins continues to prove that he can run with the best at any level of competition.
Tanner Long showed why he is a top competitor on the track in the long and tiring 5000 meter race, finishing 3rd overall with a time of 15:14.40.
The men's 4x400 meter relay took 9th overall with a final time of 3:34.44.
The field performances continued to hold strong.
Jared Manke was back in action in the pole vault vaulting a mark of 13-11.25 (4.25m). Manke found himself in a three-way tie for 7th overall.
Triple Jumpers Jacob Lopez and Art Hinojosa finished 9th and 12th place overall, respectively. Lopez jumped a mark of 43-06.00 (13.26m) while Hinojosa was not too far behind with a leap of 41-10.50 (12.76m).
Chris Gura competed in the shot put and discus throw. In the shot put, Gura was in a two-way tie for 20th place a throw of 42-04.75 (12.92m). In the discus throw, Gura hurled a mark of 146-10 (44.75m).
Matt Reinbolz continues to grow as a freshman hammer thrower and finished with a pretty good performance. The freshman finished ninth overall, throwing a 149-11 (45.69m).
The Leopards will be back on the track and field next week as they compete in the last SCIAC Quad Meet of the season at Caltech on Saturday.
