Jacob Lopez named SCIAC Athlete of the Week

PASADENA — Jacob Lopez has been making strides all season on both the track and the field and is starting to get noticed.

The senior from El Monte was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week on Tuesday as voted by the conference's sports information directors after posting a top-10 triple jump mark in the nation this season and two top-five finishes at SCIAC Multi-Dual 3.

Lopez unleashed a leap of 14.43 meters (47 feet, 4.25 inches) in the triple jump to finish first in the event and put himself squarely in contention for a spot at the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Lopez recorded another personal record in the long jump as he leaped 6.56m (21-06.25) and finished fourth. He added a second place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.50 seconds.

He broke his personal record in the 400m hurdles earlier this season when he ran a 55.18 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 9.

The Leopards are back in action this Saturday at the UC San Diego Invitational for a final tuneup before the 2016 SCIAC Championships on April 29-30.
