WAVERLY, Iowa — Andrew Carrasco and the men's 4x100 relay team of Nick Gonsalves, Joshua Francis, Robert Oshodin and Austin Warrington both earned All-America status on the final day of the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championships at Walston-Hoover Stadium.
Andrew Carrasco unleashed a personal- and school record toss of 57.43 meters (188 feet, 5 inches) on his second attempt to advance to the final and secured his his first All-America award in his first appearance at the national championships. The junior from Upland went into the championship meet ranked 16th among 20 qualified athletes but jumped nine seeds to secure the hardware.
The 4x100m relay team was seeded third after Friday's prelims but a shaky handoff between the second and the third legs cost it a higher finish. Gonsalves got the Leopards off to a fast start, but Francis and Oshodin could not execute a clean exchange and the Leopards fell behind. La Verne finished the race in 41.46 seconds.
Jacob Lopez wrapped up his career with a 19th place finish in the triple jump. The senior from El Monte recorded a leap of 13.95 meters (45-09.25) on his second try but it wasn't enough to get him into the final.
