Lovrensky wins Bulldog Penathlon; Sanchez sixth

REDLANDS, Calif. — Senior All-American Maddie Lovrensky won the women's competition at the annual Bulldog Pentathlon, hosted by Redlands, at the Thompson Aquatic Center on Saturday.

Mike Sanchez led the men's team with a sixth-place finish.

The competition consists of 100 yards of every stroke along with the 100 individual medley. The final results are based on a combined time for each swimmer.

Lovrensky is the first La Verne swimmer to win the Pentathlon regardless of gender. Lovrensky finished first in the 100 backstroke (57.73 seconds), the 100 freestyle (54.00) and the 100 IM (1:00.46) among the 110 swimmers who competed in all five events. Her combined time was 5:05.99, nearly four seconds ahead of second-place Ellie Jaques of Redlands (5:09.76).

"Maddie's winning the meet was especially impressive because this year's meet was the biggest ever [in terms of number of competitors]," said La Verne head coach Pat Skehan. "It was an awesome day for the Leopards."

Sanchez rode strong performances in the 100 breast (1:00.44 – third) and the 100 IM (55.85 – sixth) to finish with an aggregate time of 4:40.70 in the men's competition.

Jarrett Peterson notched a 13th-place finish for the men with a five-race total time of 4:46.42. Harry Bennett finished 31st (4:54.43) overall.

Krislyn Cha had a strong showing for the women buoyed by a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:01.84). The sophomore finished seventh overall at 5:21.48.

Melanie Consiglio was 36th overall (5:37.19) and Jackie Rojas claimed the women's 100 breast, touching the wall at 1:09.00.

All told, the Leopards recorded 87 individual results that bettered their times from the last season and the last week's meet at Pomona-Pitzer combined.

Select swimmers will return to action on Nov. 20-22 at the Arena Invitational, hosted by UCSD, at East L.A. College. Divers begin their season on Saturday at the Bulldog Diving Invitational, hosted by Redlands.

The team will reconvene for the first SCIAC Dual Meet of the year against Cal Lutheran on Dec. 6.
