Swimming and Diving splits against Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's swimming and diving team claimed 13 of 16 total events en route to a 222-50 SCIAC dual meet win over Cal Lutheran while the men fell, 152-129, at La Verne Aquatics Center on Saturday.

The Regals won both of the women's diving events to open the meet, but the Leopards took all but one swimming event for the decisive victory.

Both women's relays went to the Leopards and while multiple-event individual winner included Maddie Lovrensky, Jacqueline Rojas, Karla Fuertez and Krislyn Cha.

Kylie Cooke scored a total of 144.05 points on the 1-meter board to take second while Amber DeLoye notched a third-place total of 126.05 points. DeLoye was second on the 3-meter board with a total score of 123.20.

The 'A' quartet of Lovrensky, Rojas, Cha and Melanie Consiglio kicked off the swimming portion of the meet with a winning time of 1:55.39 in the 200 yard medley relay.

Lovrensky finished with three individual wins. The All-American cruised to easy victories in the 200 freestyle (2:00.00), the 100 backstroke (1:03.03) and the 200 backstroke (2:14.49).

Cha was also a triple-winner. The sophomore won the 200 butterfly (2:22.77), the 100 butterfly (1:02.60) and the 200 individual medley (2:20.35).

Rojas won both of the breaststroke events. The senior won the 100 with a time of 1:11.13 and

Fuertez won both of the distance events, taking the 1000 freestyle (11:26.52) and the 500 freestyle (5:34.22).

A pair of freshmen flashed potential on the women's side.

Mary Hanna, who has been holding her own in early season meets, finished just behind Lovrensky in both of the backstroke events. The Claremont product touched the wall at 1:04.58 in the 100 backstroke and 2:22.01 in the 200.

Rachel Miyoga shined in the butterfly events. The freshman from Honolulu was right behind Cha in the 100 fly (1:03.60) and the 200 fly (2:24.09).

Scott MacKay started the men's competition wit ha win on the 3-meter diving board. The senior registered a total of 283.80 points in the event and came in second on the 1-meter with a score of 233.00.

Mike Sanchez led the men's team in swimming with wins the 100 breast (1:00.14) and the 200 breast (2:11.62).

Harry Bennett out touched Sanchez in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.43 and was just behind Sanchez in the breaststroke events.

Daniel Carpenter won the 200 free with a time of 1:48.98.

The Leopards return to action on Dec. 12-14 as they host the Collegiate Winter Invitational at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif.
