Five school records fall on Day 1 of SCIAC Championships

WHITTIER, Calif. — It was a roller coaster day for the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams as they kicked off the 2015 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships in a grand fashion, but faltered in the final event of the day.

The Leopards broke a total of five school records on the day.

The women's 200 yard medley relay team of Maddie Lovrensky, Jacqueline Rojas, Krislyn Cha and Melanie Consiglio broke the old record set in last year's SCIAC Championships by nearly a full second and finished second with a time of 1:46.05 behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The result earns the team an NCAA 'B' cut.

Lovrensky, Cha and Consiglio came back, along with Karla Fuertez, to slash nearly 11 seconds off the school record in the 800 freestyle relay at 7:50.41. Lovrensky, who swam the first leg, recorded a split of 1:54.81 to take three seconds off her own program record in the 200 freestyle set at the 2013 NCAA National Championships.

On the diving boards, Amber DeLoye then broke the women's 1-meter board record with a total score of 320.49 and Scott MacKay once again bettered his record on the 3-meter board.

The men finished sixth in the 200 medley relay without their aces in backstroke and freestyle, Jarrett Peterson and Daniel Carpenter. With shuffled swimmers, La Verne touched the wall at 1:35.72.

The Leopards missed out on points in the 800 freestyle relay as both of La Verne's A team and the B team were disqualified due to early starts in the third legs.

Through Thursday's events, the women are in seventh place with 88 points and the men are in ninth with 38.

The Leopards return to action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. for the preliminaries. Finals start at 5 p.m.
