Despite Emily Carrillo's achievement of 1,000 career points, the University of La Verne dropped its second consecutive league game falling 71-66 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in SCIAC action Saturday at Ducey Gymnasium in Claremeont.
Tied at 58, the Athenas (17-4, 7-4 SCIAC) embarked on a decisive 6-0 run to gain control to take a 64-58 advantage with four minutes left to play to move into sole possession of third place in the conference standings.
With the loss, the Leopards fall into a fourth-place tie with Cal Lutheran in the conference standings.
Carrillo reached the 1,000-point mark in the first half with an 18-foot jumper with 10:49 to play. In doing so, she became the fourth SCIAC women's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark this season and the second Leopard, joining teammate Ashley Paul who achieved the milestone in January.
The Leopards led 39-37 at the half before the Athenas regained the lead early in the second frame, eventually building a seven-point advantage at 53-46 with 10:04 remaining. The Leopards crept back into the game with a pair of three-pointers from Devon Michaels and a free throw by Carrillo to knot the game at 58 with 5:44 remaining.
The Athenas pulled away late thanks to 20-26 shooting from the free throw line. Though the Leopards made 10 of 11 (90.9%) from the charity stripe, CMS enjoyed 15 more free throw attempts.
CMS forward Frannie Hemmelgarn tallied a game-high 22 points, connecting on 9 of her 17 field goal attempts.
Carrillo finished with a team-high 14 points to pace the Leopards in scoring for the seventh consecutive game. Megan Musashi totaled 13 points while Amanda Copas added 10 points.
The Leopards (9-13, 6-5 SCIAC) will resume SCIAC action Thursday night at home against Pomona-Pitzer. Tip-off is 7:30 pm.
