The University of La Verne earned its third consecutive win in conference play behind a balanced scoring effort to post a 70-51 road triumph over Caltech in SCIAC women's basketball action Thursday night at Braun Athletic Center in Pasadena.
Seven Leopard players tallied five points or more while the Green and Orange also dominated the boards by a commanding 54-25 margin over the Beavers.
La Verne (8-11, 5-3 SCIAC) led wire-to-wire, opening an 18-9 lead during the first eight minutes of the contest and increased its advantage to 19 points at 37-18 with 2:05 left en route to a 37-25 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Leopards pushed their lead back to 19 points and four different occasions. The Beavers (0-19, 0-8 SCIAC) cut the deficit down to 11 points at 60-49 with 4:45 left but were unable to cut the margin into single digits.
Amanda Copas and Emily Carrillo led the La Verne scoring efforts with 12 points each. Carrillo finished 5-8 from the field in 16 minutes of action while Copas went 4-5 on the night including 2-2 from three-point range.
Mayra Duenas totaled 8 points with Raphaelle Buenafe and Nicole Wandler collecting 7 points each in the win.
Caltech freshman Paige Logan posted a career-high 21 points to go along with a team-high 7 rebounds. Teammate Sarah Wright added 11 points in the defeat.
The win allowed the Leopards to remain in a tie for third place in the SCIAC standings. La Verne, Cal Lutheran and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps each own 5-3 conference records behind co-leaders Occidental and Redlands who sit atop the conference at 6-2.
La Verne will play host to Cal Lutheran this Saturday as part of "GO GREEN" night at Frantz Athletic Court. Tip-off is 5:00 pm.
