The University of La Verne volleyball squad dropped a four-set decision to the University of Redlands, falling to the Bulldogs by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 25-18 and 26-24 Tuesday night in SCIAC action at Currier Gymnasium in Redlands.
La Verne trailed early in the first set but battled back behind Kendall Kraiss and Randi Taylor-Toomay to take a three-point. However, the Bulldogs rallied to tie at 22-22, and took three of the next four points to prevail 25-23 in the opening stanza to grab a 1-0 set lead.
The Leopards recovered to take the second set, largely behind the play of Logan and Anna Calmer. Offensively, the Leopards hit .314 in set #2, controlling action throughout to win 25-19. Defensively, La Verne held the Bulldogs to a .161 hitting percentage.
In the third set, the Bulldogs re-established momentum by overcoming an early 9-3 deficit. From there, Redlands outscored the Leos 22-9 to win the third set 25-18. Tied at 18-18, the Bulldogs would close on a 7-0 run to seize a 2-1 set advantage. Redlands enjoyed its highest hitting percentage of the night at .265 while La Verne hit .182.
The fourth set was a see-saw affair that included a total of 12 ties. Tied at 24-24, the Bulldogs broke through on a kill from Jackie Hamilton, followed by a Leo attack error to close the match.
Logan and Taylor-Toomay each tied for match-high honors with 17 kills each in the loss. Calmer added 13 kills while Kendall Kraiss collected 43 assists, 7 kills and 16 digs. For Redlands, Morgan Buckner and Megan Phillips each registered 12 kills while Hamilton added 10.
The same two teams face off again on Friday, when the Bulldogs (16-8, 4-5 SCIAC) face the Leopards (11-9, 2-5 SCIAC) at Frantz Athletic Court at 2:00 pm. Later that day the Leos host SCIAC leader Cal Lutheran at 7:00 pm.
