Myers has career night in loss to North Central (Ill.)

LA VERNE, Calif. — Emily Myers had a career night and Kayla Chism notched the first double-double of her collegiate career, but the University of La Verne women's basketball team did not have an answer for North Central's relentless pace in a 92-74 loss at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion on Thursday night.

La Verne falls to 1-4. North Central improves to 6-0.

Myers finished the game with a career-high 27 points and tied her career-best in rebounds with 15. In a game where the Leopards struggled to establish an offensive rhythm as a team, the junior provided steady presence inside. She posted up, hit midrange jumpers and gave La Verne second opportunities with seven offensive rebounds.

Chism finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

North Central, who defeated Redlands on Tuesday, 65-61, came into their west coast swing averaging a whopping 106.5 points. Through December 1, the Cardinals led the nation in scoring offense, three-pointers made and offensive rebounds per game.

And they stayed true to their style on Thursday. The Cardinals shot fast and often and made up for a pedestrian shooting performance (.367) with sheer volume from the outside.

And three-pointers turned out to be the difference. While the two teams were nearly identical from the field—La Verne was 32-for-89 and North Central 33-for-90—the Cardinals sank 11 three-pointers and the Leopards hit just three.

North Central jumped out to a 19-6 lead to start the game and it seemed like La Verne wouldn't be able to keep up with the breakneck pace. But the Leopards chipped away at the lead and eventually trimmed the deficit to 36-32 using a 6-0 run late in the first half.

However, the Cardinals made a layup in the waning moments of the first half and started the second half on a 14-5 run to extend the lead to 52-37. La Verne answered with a couple of baskets by myers and a free throw by Gaby Moura-Hayes to get within 52-42, but that was as close as it would get.

North Central made unit substitutions not unlike line changes in ice hockey and played 18 players, none of whom played more than 17 minutes. Jamie Cuny led the Cardinals with 15 points and nine rebounds, and 14 different players scored.

La Verne returns to action on Dec. 13 at La Sierra. The tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
