Women’s Basketball stopped at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Kayla Chism had 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench but the University of La Verne women's basketball shot just 23.6 percent from the field in a 55-35 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Rains Center on Saturday.

How it happened: The Leopards compensated for their poor shooting performance with a big rebounding advantage in the first half. La Verne outrebounded the Athenas, 24-16, including a 12-2 edge on the offensive glass, and went into halftime with a one-point lead.

The teams traded baskets coming out of the break but CMS grabbed control with a backbreaking 13-0 run to take a 41-27 lead with 4:28 to go and the Leopards never recovered.

Stat of the game: The Athenas earned 25 shots at the foul line and La Verne only managed 13. CMS converted 18 of those attempts, and combined with an eight-point edge in points off turnovers, it turned out to be the final difference in the game.

Players of the game: Emily Myers played all 40 minutes and finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Shannon Irwin had six points and four steals.

Mara Falahee led the Athenas with 13 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

What it means: The loss halts La Verne's win streak at three. The Leopards fall to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in SCIAC play.

Up next: The Leopards return to action on Wednesday when they host Chapman at 7:30 p.m.
