Bush registers double-double in loss to San Diego Christian

LA VERNE, Calif. — Jasmine Bush notched the first double-double of her career but the University of La Verne women's basketball team went cold from the field in the second half and lost, 58-50, to San Diego Christian at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion on Monday afternoon.

Bush came off the bench and immediately made an impact and finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She used her quickness at her position to get to the basket for four layups and hit a jumper to reach double digits in just 11 minutes. And with Bush's help, the Leopards traded baskets with the Hawks and went into halftime tied at 32-32.

But nothing went right for the Leopards in the second half. San Diego Christian began the half with a 10-0 run as La Verne could not hit the broad side of a barn, every loose ball seemed to bounce in the Hawks' way and the Leopards never recovered.

When Diana Peña finally got the Leopards on the board with a pair of free throws, nearly 10 minutes had elapsed and it was another minute before Emily Myers made the first basket of the half for La Verne.

The Leopards were just 5-of-33 from the floor in the second half and the Hawks incredibly got to 13 offensive rebounds in the second half alone.

La Verne did force 13 turnovers and got to the line 12 times in the half to offset the disadvantage in rebounding, but the shots—including free throws—just didn't fall.

The Leopards went on a small, 7-3 run capped off by a Riki Murakami three-pointer to trim the deficit to 45-40 with 6:30 remaining, but that was a close as they would get as the Hawks answered with two consecutive layups.

Myers had another near double-double, scoring eight points while rabbing eight rebounds.

Shannon Irwin had nine points, five steals and two assists.

Angela Pena and Natalie Perales each registered a double-double for San Diego Christian. Pena had 19 points and 12 assists. Perales scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

The Leopards will have the rest of 2014 off before returning to action at home against UC Santa Cruz on New Year's Day. The tipoff is scheduled at 2 p.m.
