Leopards' comeback falls short

LOS ANGELES, Calif. —  The University of La Verne women's basketball team rallied in the final minutes of the game against Occidental to put themselves in position to tie the game late.

But Clarissa Perez's layup attempt hung on the rim and fell out, and the Tigers held on for the 92-90 win Saturday evening at Rush Gymnasium.

Season Impact: The Leopards drop to 5-14 overall and 3-7 in the SCIAC.

Occidental improves to 9-10 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Trailing by eight with under five minutes to play, the Leopards went on a 16-7 run sparked by a Bailey Kurahashi three-pointer to give themselves a chance to win in the waning seconds.

After Jessica Hanashiro drilled a jumper off an assist by Nyjeeiah Ganan to put La Verne within two, Emily Leonard missed a jumper on the other end. Ganan grabbed the rebound and the Leopards took a timeout with 15 seconds to play.

La Verne got the look they wanted, with Perez under the basket, but her contested layup just missed.

The Leopards had one more chance after a jump ball, but Alexa Withers' shot fell off the mark.

Perez led all players with 36 points with four three-pointers. It is the sixth time this season Perez has scored at least 30 points. The junior also added six assists, five rebounds, and a steal.

After setting the La Verne single-game record for made three-pointers her last time out, Bailey Kurahashi knocked down five three-pointers for 22 points off the bench.

Hanashiro led the Leopards with eight rebounds. Jada Aldana grabbed six rebounds and Ganan finished with nine points.

The Tigers were led by Triana Anderson's 30 points. Shariah Green scored 16 for Occidental.
