No. 23 Tennis splits trip to Texas

SEGUIN, Texas — The No. 23 La Verne tennis team fell to East Texas Baptist, 7-2, on Saturday at Waco Regional Tennis Center but bounced back with a solid 7-2 victory over Texas Lutheran at TLU varsity courts on Sunday.

La Verne moves to 3-3 overall.

Shenelle Trujillo and Janae Chinn got the Leopards off to a good start with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Leopards were edged at Nos. 1 and 3. Bridget Etchegaray and Savanah Goode hung tough against the 19th-ranked doubles duo of Kayla Casey and Kate Bramlett in the top-seeded flight before falling, 8-6, and Savannah Fisher and Areli Martinez also lost by a score of 8-6 at No. 3.

Goode got the lone singles win for the Leopards at No. 2, beating Tiffany Stankiewicz, 7-6(3), 1-6, 10-6, in a touch three-setter.

Fisher claimed a 6-1 first set win against Mullika Seekhieo at No. 6 singles, but dropped the final two sets.

Sunday: La Verne 7, Texas Lutheran 2 (Results)

The Leopards swept the doubles portion of the match and claimed the bottom four flights in singles to take a 7-2 win over Texas Lutheran.

Trujillo and Chinn kept rolling and got the Leopards to another good start with a 8-3 win against Brooke Taylor and Madison Dyer at No. doubles. Fisher and Martinez beat Joni Baxley and Macy Elliott, 8-4, at No. 3 and Etchegaray and Goode completed the sweept with an 8-6 win over Sofia Vega and Alli McLain at No. 1.

Trujillo clinched the match for La Verne at No. 4 singles, defeating Taylor, 6-3, 6-2. Martinez picked up a solid 6-4, 6-0 win over Megan Ingram at No. 6 singles, Chinn defeated Dyer, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 flight and Savannah Fisher won the last match of the day, 7-6(7-5), 6-2, at No. 5.

No. 11 singles player Sofia Vega and Alli McLain eached picked up a win for Texas Lutheran at the top of the ladder.

The Leopards will get an extended break before hosting Christopher Newport at the Claremont Club on Feb. 28.
