The University of La Verne improved to 5-1 in conference play after defeating Caltech in three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-10, 25-15 in SCIAC volleyball action on Friday evening at Frantz Athletic Court.
La Verne hit .371 en route to its fourth straight league win while limiting the Beavers to a -.127 clip on the evening.
The Leopards cruised in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead. Caltech, which took a set off of Redlands in its last outing, jumped out to a 12-6 advantage on the Leos in the third frame. But La Verne would respond with an 11-0 run, receiving five straight kills from Randi Taylor-Toomay during the spurt. Leading 18-13, the Leopards closed by winning seven of the final nine points to claim victory.
The duo of Brittany Yaxley (13) and Taylor-Toomay (12) led the offensive attack by combining for 25 kills. Taylor-Toomay enjoyed a .588 hitting percentage while Yaxley hit .571. Hope Allen added 6 kills in the victory. Kendall Kraiss collected 19 assists.
La Verne (12-2, 5-1 SCIAC) continues conference action Saturday morning when it travels to Eagle Rock to face Occidental College in an 11:00 am start.
