Leopards sweep Sagehens at home

LA VERNE, Calif. — Kristen Sanchez finished with eight aces and the University of La Verne volleyball team rolled on their way to a 3-0 win over the visiting Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens Tuesday night.

Set Scores: 25-12, 25-14, 25-22

Season Impact: The Leopards improve to 17-7 overall and reach double-digit wins in SCIAC play at 10-4. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 8-19 overall and 5-10 in the SCIAC.

Sanchez helped set the tone for the dominating win in The Tents. The junior added multiple aces in each set with zero service errors. Sanchez currently leads the SCIAC with 39 total aces this season. She also dished out seven assists with 16 digs.

Freshman Kiana Valdivieso had a big game, leading all players with nine kills while adding five digs. 

In the first set after an attack error cut the Leopards' lead to 15-12, La Verne closed out the set on a 10-0 run. Sanchez added three aces during the stretch. 

It was more of the same the following set with La Verne jumping out to an early 9-2 lead. Pomona-Pitzer again cut the lead to three, but La Verne rallied to end the set on an 11-3 run.

The Sagehens battled in the final set, but back-to-back kills by Marisa Rojo and Alexia Balistreri sealed the win for La Verne.

Kelsie Sievers totaled seven kills in the game. Rojo added six kills with nine digs. 

Madison Maynes finished with 19 assists and nine digs. Natalie Barragan finished with nine assists.

Katelyn Winiecki put down six kills and Balisteri added five of her own. 

Next Game: The Leopards head to Occidental this Friday to face the Tigers at 6 p.m. in Rush Gymnasium.
