Volleyball beats Poets on Senior Day, earns No. 2 seed

LA VERNE, Calif. — Marisa Rojo and Alexia Balistreri shined on Senior Day and the University of La Verne volleyball team scored a four-set win over the visiting Whittier College Poets Saturday night.

Set Scores: 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20

Season Impact: With the win, the Leopards earn the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The Leopards will host the Cal Lutheran Regals next Thursday at 7 p.m. La Verne finishes the regular season with an 18-8 overall record and 11-5 in SCIAC play.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will host Chapman University next Thursday in the other semifinal match-up.

Rojo led the Leopards with 13 kills on .355 hitting with 14 digs. Balistreri turned in nine kills with a .318 hitting percentage.

Kelsie Sievers also added nine kills.

The Leopards dominated the opening set, leading by as many as 12 points on their way to winning the set.

La Verne commanded the second set to go up 2-0.

After Whittier took the third set, the Leopards hit .395 as a team to win the final set.

Madison Maynes dished 28 assists. Natalie Barragan added 17 assists of her own.

Kristen Sanchez led all players with 29 digs.
