Leopards open season with PCC

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne volleyball team opened the 2019 season with the annual Pacific Coast Classic at the Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

Game One: Augsburg 3, La Verne 0

Set Scores: 25-12, 25-12, 25-18

Freshman Emily Cohen led the Leopards in their season opener against the Auggies with six kills. Fellow freshman Rylee Callen added four kills of her own and senior Darrah Jones put down three.

Junior transfer Pi'ikea Clemens notched a team-high eight digs. Freshman Noelle Blumel recorded seven digs and senior Madison Maynes added six. Maynes led the Leopards with 14 assists.

Kayla Gjerde led Augsburg with nine kills.

Game Two: St. Olaf 3, La Verne 1

Set Scores: 34-32, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21

The Leopards responded in the second game of the day with a close match against St. Olaf. The Leopards forced extra points in each of the first two sets but fell in four to the visitors. 

Jones led the Leopards with 13 kills in the effort to go with eight digs and three blocks. Callen put down 11 kills of her own with five digs and four blocks.

Maynes had a big overall game for the Leopards. The veteran spread the ball around dealing 36 assists, dug 17 balls, and added seven kills.

Emma Estigoy had a huge game defensively for the Leopards. The junior recorded a career-high 38 digs to keep La Verne close and also dished out nine assists. 

Clemens added seven kills, 13 digs, three assists, and two blocks.

Next Game

The Leopards conclude the Pacific Coast Classic tomorrow with an 11:30 a.m. game against Benedictine and a 3:45 match versus Carroll.
