LA VERNE, CA — Haley Celaya had a hot night attacking and the University of La Verne volleyball team responded to a set one loss to defeat the visiting Cal Lutheran Regals 3-1 Saturday evening.

Season Impact
The Leopards have won six of their last seven matches and improve to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play. Their sole blemish during the stretch was to No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. La Verne currently sits in third place in the SCIAC standings.

Stat Leaders
Celaya was dominant offensively for the Leopards. The sophomore hit an outstanding. 378 in the match and totaled a game-high 20 kills in the win. The Covina native also had a big night on the defensive end, totalling 16 digs.

Madison Maynes was reliable as usual offensive dishing out 40 assists but made a huge impact defensively totaling 20 digs and four blocks including a solo block for the final point of the match.

Ayana Mier continued to make her presence known in her rookie season. The freshman finished with 11 kills on .455 hitting with a pair of digs and blocks.
Fellow freshman Camryn Sievers made a big impact late for La Verne adding six kills, two blocks, and a dig on .357 hitting. Emily Cohen reached double-digit kills in back-to-back games, finishing with 10 against the Regals with six digs and an ace.
Libero Emma Estigoy had a stellar all-around game. The junior totaled three aces, 24 digs, and nine assists. Emily Heldenbrand added a big defensive effort and totalled 11 digs.
The Regals were led by Mackenzie Martinez's 10 kills and Jenna Jones' 24 assists.
How It Happened
La Verne used hot hitting in the final set to complete the win. The Leopards finished the frame with a .318 hitting percentage to win to pull off the three-point win.
The Leopards fell behind big in the first set 21-10, La Verne went on a 7-0 run to get back into striking distance with the Regals. But the Leopards couldn't overcome the slow start and the Regals took the opening set.
It looked like it would be more of the same in the second set after Cal Luthern jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage. The Leopards responded earlier the second time are and began chipping away at the deficit and took a 15-14 following back-to-back attack errors by the Regals. The Leopards rolled to a 7-2 run from that point capped off by a Cohen ace.
Next Game
The Leopards are back in action on Tuesday, October 1 when they travel to Whittier College to take on the Poets at 7 p.m.
